Webcast Transcript

DR. NANCY SYNDERMAN: Hi, I’m Dr. Nancy Snyderman with this week’s Healthful Hint.

Some kids are scared of the dark or monsters in the closet. But if your little one’s big fear is going to the doctor, it’s something you better not ignore.

Sit down and talk to your child about what worries him the most. One way to get the ball rolling is to read a children’s book about visiting the doctor. Or buy a play medical kit and then you can listen to a stuffed animal’s heart or give a favorite doll a shot.

It also helps to call the medical staff before your child’s appointment and ask them to describe any procedure your child is facing. That way you can prepare your child by explaining the procedure in simple language.

Once at the doctor’s office, reassure your frightened child by holding or touching him. Bring a special book or video game to occupy him in the waiting room. And during the procedure, try distracting the child with a familiar story or song.

And don’t forget follow-up; once you’re back home, ask your child what he thought were the best and worst parts of the doctor’s visit. Talking it out may just keep your child from acting up the next time around.

With Healthful Hints, I’m Dr. Nancy Snyderman.
